1. Open-Concept Kitchen
The open-concept trend works in offices for better collaboration and communication among employees. But in kitchens? No, it does not work. Sure, it might have appealed too many in the past years, but knocking down walls and opening up all the space is baffling.
According to TreeHugger.com, in the past, particularly in the thirties, small, separate kitchens were formed to provide women freedom. It serves as the “space of your own to be creative and be yourself”, and without the walls, that very purpose is gone.
2. Wood Flooring
Wood and water do not mix well. That’s the problem with wood flooring. It may look good, but it may not be worth the investment, given its lifespan. With all the cooking and washing (of dishes) that you have to do in the kitchen, every drop of water on your precious wooden floor damages it, diminishing its life by the minute.
Instead of wood, you could remodel your kitchen floor by installing tiles. At least tiles are more durable and require less maintenance compared to wood.
3. All-White Kitchens
No one can ever really go wrong with an all-white kitchen. The problem is, it’s existed for quite a while now and it has to stop. It’s time to bring back color in the kitchen, a space where there’s a need for homeowners to be creative with the cooking.
This year, it’s time to put the all-white style in the past and go for something bold. It’s still OK to go for white, but add a little color into it. Go for something with personality, something that will stand out amidst all the white walls, like red cupboards. Or you could try something with texture.
4. Marble Countertops
Marble countertops have had a lot of time looking trendy and sleek. But just as it is with all-white kitchens the time has come to put marble—the actual stone, not the look of marble—behind.
The issue with real marble countertops is that they come with a lot of issues. In short, they require high maintenance. For instance, you have to reseal them every few years. You have to be very careful because marble easily stains, chips, or scratches.
Instead of spending too much time stressing over maintaining your marble countertop, go for more durable options, such as granite or quartz.
This year, you could choose to go for a green kitchen, a relaxing color for the eyes. Or you could give bold backsplashes a try. The only limit, after all, is your imagination.
