COVID-19 Hacks: Suggestions for Spending Your Free Time While Staying Home

Share

For sure, many of you have had your lives changed one way or another by the COVID-19 pandemic. You don’t get to see your family and friends often, eat at your favorite hole-in-the-wall, and so on. And this is simply because you’re stuck at home.

But you all need to look on the bright side. Not being able to do your usual activities outside your home probably leaves you with a lot of time on your hands—time you can use to make yourself better even while cooped up in your house during this pandemic.

Here are three ways you can make fair use of your free time at home:

Learn something new

Chances are, there are many things you haven’t gotten around to trying yet because you haven’t had the time. Well, this is your chance now. If, for example, you’ve wanted to try yoga for some time now, go online and check out yoga tutorial videos for beginners. Or maybe it’s now time to take some piano lessons online so that you can play the piano that’s just gathering dust in your house.

You can also unleash the artist in you and teach yourself origami, pottery-making, painting, etc., from books or online videos. Whether you succeed or fail at a new endeavor, the important thing is you were able to try your hand at something you like.

Take your hobby to the next level

Of course, you already have a hobby or two that you enjoy doing at home, even before the pandemic struck. Take your favorite pastime to a whole new level by investing more of your time and money. For instance, you collect Hot Wheels, Matchbox, and other toy cars. It will be great, then, if you add to your collection some items, such as the Tamiya Ford GT and LEGO Technic Bugatti Chiron, that you built yourself.

And if you bake to while away time, you should consider upgrading your tools (heat-proof silicon spatulas, immersion blender, stainless sheet pans, etc.), so you can try more complex baking recipes. The best part of taking your hobbies more seriously is that it can also turn into an income-generating activity.

Share your knowledge and skills

There’s probably no better use of your free time than helping other people learn. Surely, you have knowledge and skills that others, especially those who are just starting a particular activity, will find truly useful. Perhaps you had formal training in tae kwon do, karate, or other martial arts when you were younger, and now your kids are old enough to learn some basics from you.

Or you might have a green thumb, so think about creating a comprehensive blog or video on apple grafting, starting a vegetable garden, composting, etc., for the struggling newbies. Look at sharing the knowledge and skills you have as your way of paying it forward for learning from other people as well.

Change for the Better

Without a doubt, the COVID-19 pandemic has changed many of your lives, but it’s up to each one of you if your life will change for the better or worse. And if you choose for the better, you can start by making good use of your free time while being cooped up at home.
